Sunday March 30th, 2014 sister Sheila Sanchez, of the Anaheim congregation, and I went canvassing door to door a couple of blocks from the Anaheim church building.
Out of the 10 houses we visited between 2:10 PM and 4:45 PM, six people answered. four studied Matthew 7:13,14, 21-23 and 1 Timothy 3:16,17 with us at the door, one spoke only Spanish, which neither of us speak and one was a hospital chaplain who was not interested in talking with us about the Bible.
The four mini studies resulted in one man Tom indicating that he was interested in having a personal study and asked to schedule it Sunday evenings at the assembly during Anaheim’s evening meeting time. He did not however show up and there has not been contact with him since. Another of these contacts, Alex, spoke English but with limited vocabulary and even more limited English reading ability. Our mini study with him included both Spanish and English Bibles and Spanish and English Open Bible Study material. Alex was involved in a church group and study already and was unwilling to schedule a personal study of OBS but showed interest in considering the OBS study materials on his own and welcomed a return visit to follow up on the OBS lesson left with him. The third mini study was with a Romanian man named Reuben. Reuben said he knew and believed the things we studied, but was to busy working to go to church very much with his wife and son little lone schedule a personal study with us. A few more texts were discussed and Reuben was encourage to prioritize God in his life for his souls sake. An Open Bible Study lesson was left with him, which he intended to share with his wife and son, as well as one of my personal cards containing the gospel message, my personal contact information and a website to study the Bible online. During the conversation Reuben suggested that he preferred to read things in Romanian vs English to which I suggested that I thought we could probably get material from World Bible School in Romanian. After further investigation I found that this is correct. As a matter of fact World Bible School has Bible study materials in the thirty three languages. Online study langues are English, Spanish and Portuguese. Postal mail study languages are English, Spanish, Portuguese, Braille, French, Russian, Italian, German, Czech, Slovakian, Romanian, Hungarian, Ukrainian, Lithuanian, Nepali, Hindi, Telegu, Tamil, Oriya, Malayalam, Marathi, Kannada, Punjabi, Tagalog, Chinese Mandarin, Indonesian, Arabic, Swahili, Africaans, Shona, Tonga, Xhoas, and Zulu. Nice right! The fourth person Sheila and I had a mini study with was young college student named Kevin. Kevin seemed to have very little knowledge of the Bible but an interest in discussing it and its content as it related to world religions, evolution and its central message. Kevin was unwilling to schedule further personal study with us because he felt he was too busy with work, college and a sick aunt whom he attends to. He was however interested in further contact and discussion about evidences for Bible inspiration.
In just two hours and thirty-five minutes one Sunday afternoon, the seed of the kingdom was sown (the word Lk. 8:5-8,11) in the fields of four men’s hearts. Not only seeds of friendship which are often the seeds referred to in door knocking efforts (our names, the places we meet as the church, our love for God and them and invitations to our assemblies), but also seeds of the Kingdom of God (heaven and hell are real places people are going when they die; only those who do the will of God in Jesus will go to Heaven; all who do not do God’s will in Jesus, no matter how “good” they are will be cast away from God into hell; Only God’s word reveals His will and can make us adequate before God, equipped for every good work – Mt. 7:13,14,21-23, 1 Tm. 3:16,17)! Both types of seed are needed, but one contains the power of God to save the lost (Rom. 1:16)!
Please pray for these men. Pray that the word of God which has been sown may find the good soil of noble and good hearts in them, in which the the seed can take root and produce a crop (Lk. 8:11-15). Please also pray for future workers with these men to be able to manifest the message of Christ in an effective way (Cl. 4:3,4).
Have you got a couple of hours Sunday afternoons to meet the people near your meeting house to sow the seed of the kingdom in their lives?
“I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase. Now he who plants and he who waters are one, and each one will receive his own reward according to his own labor.” 1 Corinthians 2:6-8
