Following my first encounter with James Tuesday at Carl’s Junior, Duane Shelton of the Anaheim congregation and I visited with him again during some follow up work we were doing Wednesday evening. The Anaheim church meets Thursday nights, so Wednesday nights are free.
This visit supplied us quite a bit more information about James and his situation. He continued to be drunk, as I think he is perpetually. Our focus with him was discerning if he was willing to take steps to help himself sober up, live out his profession of faith in God and become a productive member of society again. He responded in the affirmative. With James being drunk all the time it is hard to discern if he really knows what is going on and will remember it. However, we am willing to extend at least some effort in his behalf to see if he might take some initiative and find help. If he refuses the help, than we’ve done what we can.
This visit prompted an interesting development. While speaking with James in the parking lot where he lives, a woman by the name of Infra whom he calles his girlfriend arrived in a car. Infra approached us with a bowl of soup and some crackers for James. Duane and I spoke with the two of them for something like an hour. During that conversation Infra shared her faith with us and how she came to know James. Long story short, she professes to be a devoutly religious person who saw James in his homeless drunken position and felt moved to take pity on him. If I understand correctly, she visits him regularly, brings him food and washes his clothing for him. She hopes that somehow her kindness might help him choose a better life for himself.
During our visit, we asked Infra if she would be interested in a personal Bible Study and she accepted! We scheduled the study with her beginning Wednesday June 4th. Please pray for our studies with Infra.
Where can you do good for some soul today? What opportunities is God supplying you? Ask the Lord to help you share His saving message with when you do good.
“Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary. So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.” Galatians 6:10
P.S. Duane, James, Infra and I are not in the picture.
