Barely English But A Whole Lot Of Gospel!

Months ago an evangelistic training session involved Anaheim sisters Pamela Hernandez and Janice Shelton and myself knocking doors in Pamela’s apartment complex.

A woman who could barely speak English answered her door and studied Matthew 7:13-14, 21-23 and 1 Timothy 3:16,17 with us. During the initial discussion she went into her house and brought back a Spanish Bible. She could understand English enough and then read in her Spanish Bible to get the gist that we were encouraging her to study with us. She indicated interest in studying with us and suggested we speak with her daughter across the breezeway who might also be interested and able to help with translation.

A day or two later I called the contact number the woman had given for her daughter and the husband answered. He suggested that he and his wife (the daughter or the original woman) were very involved in studies with their church and at that time busy with a marriage study they were in. He suggested that he would speak to his wife about her interest in study and get back with us.

He never returned a call and an attempt to hand off contact with his mother-in-law to Spanish speaking brethren outside of the Anaheim assembly failed.

A couple of months later Brother Duane Shelton from the Anaheim assembly and I attempted to revisit the original woman. She was not home, so we jumped over the breezeway and visited her daughter’s house. We missed the daughter (work) but caught her husband home. He apologized for not returning my call and said he, his wife and possibly a couple of other relatives were interested in studying with us.

We scheduled a time and as of last Monday night, completed our second study with the husband Agi, wife Tracy and mother Rebecca. Leon Sims of the Anaheim assembly joined me as a personal teacher’s helper for these studies. So far we have covered the old covenant, new covenant relationship and that we must go to Jesus teachings to find out how to be saved. All three of these souls share that they are grateful to have help studying and are eager to continue.

Rebecca said that she has plans to visit family in Mexico in September and would like to share the study we are doing with her, with her them. She also suggested that she wished I could accompany her, to which I suggested that speaking only English I may not be all that helpful to her. I did however suggest that I would consider going if I could be helpful. I also suggested that Spanish speaking brethren might be able to be contacted who could assist better than myself. If you are one of these or know of someone who is, feel free to contact me about a possible September trip to Mexico to share the gospel.

Leon and I have supplied Rebecca with a Spanish version of the Open Bible Study materials we are studying with her and her family. We have the family take turns reading the Bible and answering the questions. Rebecca does this mostly in Spanish and her son-in-law and daughter translate to us. The next study is scheduled for this Monday night.

Please pray for this study and an open door for the gospel in Mexico.

Don’t let a language barrier stop you from trying to share the gospel with those God puts in your way. Do what you can and know that God is doing much more!

“Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him [be] the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.” Ep. 3:20,21

I am posting this a second time in order to get it to show a notification on my facebook page. My blog connection to Facebook has apparently not been working since the end of May. My apologies for any annoyance to those who’ve already seen it.
